This Father's Day, those fathers were given something many thought might be out of reach: six uninterrupted hours with their sons. For one afternoon, prion routines gave way co fishing poles, footballs, golf clubs, barbecue, and conversations that had been years in the making. Fathers and sons spent time together doing ordinary things, but for many of these families, there was nothing ordinary about it.
Down by the river, boats carried fathers and sons out onto the water to fish together. For some, it was their first time fishing. For others, it was the first time they had ever spent a day side by side with their son.
One father shared that he hadn't seen his son in 12 to 15 years.
"So he's heard stories about me, and they were pretty rough stories," he said. "Being able to talk about God with him and let him see a different side of me than what he's heard, it's been awesome."
For years, his son had only known him through stories. Now, sitting together on a boat, he had the chance to show him who he is today and talk about the work God has done in his life.
Before the activities began, each father sat down and wrote a letter to his son. Along with the letter, every boy received a Bible to take home. Some of those words had been waiting years to be spoken.
One father wrote:
"I think about you all the time, and when those thoughts get heavy, I dig in a little more to stay stronger. I'm proud of the things you've accomplished and the man you're becoming. Keep grinding and chasing your dreams. Most of all, I'm grateful to have you as a son and to be able to say you're a child of mine proudly."
As the day continued, footballs flew across the field, golf balls rolled across the grass, and fathers took every opportunity they could to encourage their sons, share their faith, and make up for lost time. The words brought healing not only to their relationship, but to wounds the father had carried for years.
As the afternoon went on, dark clouds rolled in and rain began to fall. Instead of running for cover, the fathers stepped into the storm and surprised their sons with a dance they had rehearsed in secret just for them. Soaked from head to toe, they laughed, danced, and created a memory their boys will carry with them for years to come.
When the day came to an end, one father struggled to find words for what the experience had meant.
"This is the first day in his entire life that we've got to spend a day together as father and son," he said. "This is the day that can never be forgotten."
Days like this remind us why family restoration matters. Because every father deserves the opportunity to become the man God created him to be. Every son deserves to know he is loved. And every relationship, no matter how broken it may seem, is a story God can redeem.
